Let's Clear Up Some Myths About Hypnosis
First things first, hypnosis won't turn you into a chicken. You won't reveal your deepest secrets, hand over your bank details, or suddenly develop an uncontrollable urge to bark at the moon.
Sorry to disappoint anyone hoping for party tricks, but that's stage hypnosis, entertainment designed to be dramatic and, let's be honest, a bit silly.
Real therapeutic hypnosis is wonderfully ordinary. And that's actually the point.
So What Actually IS Hypnosis?
Think of hypnosis as a state of deep relaxation and focused attention. You know that feeling when you're so absorbed in a good book that you don't hear someone calling your name? Or when you're driving a familiar route and suddenly realise you don't remember the last few minutes? That's a natural trance state, and it's surprisingly similar to hypnosis.
In a hypnotherapy session, we're simply creating that focused state deliberately, with a specific purpose. Your conscious mind, the part that's always analysing, worrying, and reminding you that you forgot to reply to that email, takes a little break. Meanwhile, your subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions and new ways of thinking.
You're always in control. Always aware. You can't get "stuck" in hypnosis any more than you can get stuck in a daydream. If the fire alarm went off, you'd snap right out of it. Hopefully, that won't happen.
What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?
Most people describe it as deeply relaxing, like that floaty feeling just before you fall asleep, but you remain aware of what's happening. Some people feel heavy and sink into the chair. Others feel light, almost floating. Some people's minds wander a bit (that's fine!). Others stay laser-focused on every word.
There's no "wrong" way to experience hypnosis. Your version of trance might look different from someone else's, and that's perfectly normal. You might not even feel particularly "hypnotised," and that's okay too; it still works.
What Works Well With Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is brilliant for things that involve changing automatic responses or patterns. This includes:
Anxiety and stress: Teaching your mind to respond with calm instead of panic.
Phobias and fears: Reframing how you respond to specific triggers.
Habits and unwanted behaviours: Smoking, nail-biting, that sort of thing.
Confidence and performance: Exams, public speaking, sports, driving tests.
Sleep issues: Helping your brain remember how to switch off.
Pain management: Changing how you perceive and respond to discomfort.
Weight management: Shifting your relationship with food.
Basically, if your brain has learned an unhelpful automatic response, hypnosis can help it learn a better one.
What Hypnosis ISN'T
Hypnosis isn't magic. It can't make you do something that goes against your values or beliefs. It can't make you forget things you want to remember (despite what the movies suggest). It won't work if you're fighting it the whole time, though a healthy bit of scepticism is fine.
In fact, intelligent, creative people often make excellent hypnosis subjects because they can engage their imagination effectively. It's also not a replacement for medical treatment. If you have a serious medical condition, hypnotherapy works best alongside conventional treatment, not instead of it.
The Bottom Line
Hypnosis is simply a tool that helps you access your own inner resources more effectively. Think of it as having a conversation with the part of your brain that's been running old programming that no longer serves you. Together, we update that programming to something more helpful.
No swinging watches required. No loss of control. Just you, relaxing deeply, while your subconscious mind becomes more open to positive change. And yes, you'll definitely remember the session afterwards. Though you might feel so relaxed that you'll wish you could forget you have to go back to normal life.
How Does Hypnosis Work So Quickly on Long-Term Issues?
Here's something that surprises people: you can carry an issue for twenty years and shift it in a handful of sessions. It seems counterintuitive, doesn't it? Surely something you've struggled with for decades should take decades to fix?
But here's the thing: the subconscious mind doesn't work on the same timeline as talk therapy. Your issue might be twenty years old, but the neural pattern creating it? That's happening right now, in the present moment. When we access that pattern directly through hypnosis, we can update it remarkably quickly.
Think of it like this: imagine you've been taking the same route to work for years, and every day you hit the same frustrating traffic jam. You could spend years discussing why the traffic jam exists, how it makes you feel, and where it comes from. Or you could simply update your sat nav and take a different route. Hypnosis is the sat nav update for your brain.
The subconscious doesn't need convincing through logic and repetition the way the conscious mind does. It responds to experience, emotion, and imagery. When we create the right intervention at the subconscious level, change can happen in the time it takes your brain to form a new neural pathway. Which, as it turns out, is pretty quick.
A Word From Me (Dominique)
I need to be honest with you about something: not all hypnotherapy is created equal.
In my sixteen years of private practice as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I've seen the full spectrum. There's a world of difference between what I call "relaxotherapy," which is lovely, soothing, and feels wonderful in the moment, and the kind of deep, transformative work that actually rewires how your brain responds to anxiety, trauma, addiction, and those patterns that have been running your life for far too long.
Please don't misunderstand me. Relaxation has its place. A calm voice and a nice guided meditation can be genuinely helpful for stress management. But if you're dealing with serious anxiety, the aftermath of trauma, addictive behaviours, or those deep-rooted issues that keep showing up no matter how much you want them gone? You need more than a sticking plaster.
This is why I've spent years training in advanced methods. NLP, Time Line Therapy, Coaching, and various Psychotherapeutic approaches. I blend these together to create interventions that don't just help you feel better for an hour. They create actual, lasting change in how your mind processes experiences.
My specialism is anxiety and trauma, including all the complicated ways trauma shows up in your life, often years after the original event. Addictions, panic, phobias, those inexplicable reactions that make perfect sense once we understand what your subconscious is trying to protect you from.
I work at the level where the problem actually lives: in your subconscious patterns, your neural pathways, your automatic responses. We're not just talking about your issues or helping you relax through them. We're actually changing them.
Does every client need this depth of work? No. Some people genuinely do just need to relax more. But if you've been carrying something heavy for a long time, if you've tried other things that haven't worked, if you're ready for real change rather than temporary relief, that's where this approach comes into its own.
After sixteen years, I can tell you this: the clients who experience the most profound shifts are the ones who were ready to go deeper than surface-level symptom management. They wanted to understand why their brain was doing what it was doing, and then actually change it.
If that sounds like what you're looking for, then we should talk.
